Sebaye has been equated with sad-bhävya, the e in the first syllable being due to the influence of ye the last syllable. It is also possible to equate sebaye with sabhaya, "civilised conduct". The syllables se to ma can also be read as se baye nāma and interpreted as: " it is fear indeed ", referring to the sacrifice.
